Identify the measure before drawing a conclusion
The BLS occupational profile projects 10% employment growth for the combined group of software developers, quality assurance analysts and testers from 2025 to 2035. It also reports about 106,100 annual openings on average over that period, including replacement needs. These U.S. projections were checked on September 11, 2026.
Those measures are not a count of junior vacancies available today. They do not provide an individual applicant’s probability of receiving an offer.
Keep sources in separate columns
| Source type | What it can help describe | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Occupation projection | Long-term employment direction | Broad scope and future uncertainty |
| Wage survey | Pay within a defined population | Not necessarily total compensation or entry-level pay |
| Job-posting sample | Advertised requirements in a period | Duplicates and selection bias |
| Personal application log | Your own process and outcomes | Too narrow to describe the whole market |
The table is an original evidence-reading framework. It does not combine incompatible datasets into a single market score.
Build a transparent posting sample
If you collect vacancies, record the source, date, location, role, level and requirements. Define how you handle reposts and one vacancy advertised in several locations. Keep the raw records needed to reproduce the analysis, respecting the source’s terms and personal-data boundaries.
Do not call a convenience sample representative without evidence. A sample from one employer or a single platform can be useful for a narrow question, but its limits must remain visible. We have not conducted such a survey for this launch.
Turn evidence into a bounded next step
Use the data to identify a role or skill to investigate, then inspect actual work expectations. O*NET provides occupation information that can help structure the comparison. It should not replace the employer’s job description.
Track your own applications consistently and distinguish stages such as submitted, screened, interviewed and offered. A small personal log can reveal a process bottleneck without establishing a market-wide conclusion.
Continue with the salary-data guide, compare education routes or explore specializations. Use each source for the question it can actually answer.
